PANAJI: Two days before the release of Home Sweet Home, director Swapnil Shetkar was holed up in Mumbai, wondering if his movie will see the light of day. In the making of the movie, Shetkar had seen the banks slam doors on his face when approached for a personal loan, had mortgaged assets and gold to raise funds and risked his personal resources to make ends meet. Still, he needed `5 lakh to ensure that the movie — budgeted at Rs 75 lakh — has a proper release.

There were just 48 hours on hand to save his dream but like fortune that favours the brave man, things started to roll into place. A month later, not just the director, but the entire cast and crew — possibly even the nascent Konkani film industry — is living a dream as Home Sweet Home goes about striking a chord with every Goan.

'When I thought of this story line, I knew people would relate to it,' said Shetkar who has produced and directed the film along with co-producer, Madhav Gad. And the reaction has been quite phenomenal. For a month now, the movie has been running to packed audiences at cinemas in the city. It opened in 12 theatres across the state, every show was houseful for the first week, staged 102 shows in 14 days and has not shown any signs of slowing down even close to a month after its eye-catching release. 'Home Sweet Home' is made for every Goan and tells the story of an NRI who returns home after 15 years of 'service' in the United States. When he sets foot at the airport and is driven 'home' by a helpful taxi driver, he discovers to his horror that his ancestral home is no longer there; instead, there is a sprawling residential complex. It's a story that you have so often heard in the past and made headlines when Arjuna awardee Dr Otilia Mascarenhas saw her ancestral property in Porvorim fraudulently 'sold' to a land shark.

'When Swapnil first narrated the story to me, I told him to go ahead instantly. It's a story that needed to be told and it was never going to be easy,' says John D'Silva, the man who makes you laugh at the drop of a hat in tiatrs but gets us all teary-eyed in this movie. D'Silva plays the NRI in Home Sweet Home and the affable taxi driver is Rajdeep Naik, another famed actor who has carved a niche for himself on the Marathi stage. D'Silva and Naik get along like a house on fire and it is their camaraderie that pulls the film through.

'I met John only on the first day of shooting,' disclosed Naik, shattering an opinion that you've made up watching the movie, thinking these two might have got their off-field friendship and mutual admiration for each other on screen. 'Our friendship grew each day. I had never met John prior to the shooting but I knew, having worked with Prince Jacob and others in the past that tiatr artistes are immensely sincere. With nataks, many tend to get carried away with their (limited) success,' explained Naik.

Not just the two, almost every other actor has played his role to perfection. From the corrupt police officer, greedy politician, helpful lawyer and a guest appearance by Prince Jacob as chief minister — Manohar Parrikar, no doubt — everyone slips into their character like an old jeans. 'The characters were perfect,' felt D'Silva. Shetkar adds,'I've been friends with Rajdeep for a long time now and we have been actively discussing this movie.

As for John sir, his talent is redoubtable. The film needed two lead actors from different communities and I could not look beyond 'John sir' and Rajdeep,' said the director, who is now preparing for a national and international release of the movie. D'Silva himself wasn't sure if he would be able to allot as many dates as the director wanted. And with conflicting reports emerging about his trip to the United States for another tiatr, there seemed no end to the uncertainty. In the end, there was no cause for worry.
