Rating: A mild-mannered comedy about an amnesiac private detective who keeps reliving the past because he can't remember it, CLEAN SLATE aspires to the whimsical appeal of GROUNDHOG DAY without success. Venice, California private eye Maurice Pogue (Dana Carvey) awakens each day with a problem. He has no idea who he is or what he's up to; his closet is filled with an array of clothes so disparate that he could be anything from an investment banker to a cowpoke. Pogue's only clue is the tape he makes laboriously each night and leaves by his bedside. It informs him--and us--that since being injured while investigating the theft of a rare coin worth $7 million, Pogue has suffered from a rare form of amnesia that wipes his memory clean every night while he sleeps. This would be merely annoying if he were not scheduled to testify in court against a vicious gangster named Cornell (Michael Gambon), who regularly threatens to kill him and worse if he doesn't hand over the coin.

Pogue's tape warns him that he must hide his memory loss from everyone, which naturally results in many complicated situations. First thing this particular morning, he's hauled off to the local police station by a pair of stone-faced cops; expecting the worst, he finds himself at a surprise birthday party--his own. Pogue must also solve the mystery of the missing coin before the trial; wheelchair bound District Attorney Dolby (James Earl Jones), another longtime friend, is counting on his testimony.

Meanwhile, Dolby's assistant Rosenheim (Kevin Pollak), Pogue's best friend, is convinced his sexy cop fiancee (Olivia d'Abo) is cheating on him, and all evidence points to Pogue. Matters are further complicated by the breathlessly sexy Sarah Novak (Valeria Golino), who rushes into Pogue's office claiming men are trying to kill her. A slinky model, she too is mixed up in the case of the missing coin, and like any good femme fatale, she's hiding something: she's Pogue's lover, and she's supposed to have died in a car bombing, the same one that caused his amnesia.

Pogue's investigation is less a story than a series of comic sketches; his misadventures include a visit to his doting mother, at which he must reminisce about friends and family he doesn't remember, and the scene in which, while attending a fashion show in which Sarah is appearing at a local museum, he wanders into a lecture hall and is mistaken for a visiting professor. Guided only by a singularly unhelpful series of slides, he must improvise a lecture. Pogue eventually discovers the coin in his own apartment, hidden in his adorable dog's collar. The film's final comic set-piece involves his testimony in court, which Sarah must feed to him through a hidden headset. CLEAN SLATE is a comedy so lightweight that it's in perpetual danger of shriveling up and blowing away.

It at first appears to be a sort of comic homage to noir films, but that conceit is quickly abandoned in favor of an occasionally amusing but largely labored comedy of mistaken identity. An alumnus of the TV comedy show 'Saturday Night Live,' star Carvey has a small-scale, mild-mannered presence that doesn't amount to much on the big screen, and leading lady Valeria Golino, an Italian actress laboring under the weight of European bombshell stereotypes, has the thankless role of straight woman. CLEAN SLATE's greatest asset is Barkley, the Jack Russell terrier who plays Pogue's dog and goes through the film wearing an eye patch meant to compensate for depth perception problems. A feisty little dog with a visual impairment can hardly help but be funny, and Barkley walks into walls, smacks into car windows, misses his dog door, and overshoots his food bowl with slapstick aplomb that would be the envy of many two-legged comics. Barkley was such a surprise hit with audiences and critics that later CLEAN SLATE ads and posters featured his name prominently. (Sexualsituations, violence, profanity.).
